James R. West

President and Chief Executive Officer, PIH Health

Welcome to PIH Health’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Annual Report. This report highlights the progress we have made over the past year—showcasing our dedication to patient-centered care, innovation, and service to our patients and community.

At the start of the year, PIH Health Whittier Hospital celebrated 50 years of lifesaving care in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and later, PIH Health Downey Hospital marked its 105th anniversary. Looking ahead, we are excited to honor PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital’s 140th Anniversary in November 2025 as the oldest hospital in Los Angeles. These milestones reflect a meaningful legacy of compassion, expertise, and vital care for all our patients—from the tiniest baby to every generation that follows.

This year also presented both challenges and opportunities that tested our organization and reinforced the strength and dedication of our people. From responding to a systemwide cyberattack and addressing the impacts of the nationwide IV shortage to navigating regional wildfires and changes in healthcare and federal policies, our physicians, staff, and volunteers remained focused on delivering safe, high-quality care when it was needed most. Their steadfast dedication demonstrates the depth of PIH Health’s commitment to those we serve, even in the most complex circumstances.

A defining achievement this year was the launch of our five-year strategic plan (FY 2025–2029), a comprehensive roadmap for our future. This plan guides our organizational priorities and empowers us to expand access and enhance the patient experience. Since its launch, we have already made measurable progress—initiating the development of new facilities, strengthening patient services, and opening innovative programs designed to meet evolving community needs. The plan also encourages collaboration across teams and departments, ensuring every member of PIH Health contributes to shaping a responsive, agile healthcare system. Equally meaningful was the refreshing of our Mission, Vision, and Values, which provide a foundation for every decision and interaction, reinforcing the principles that unify our teams and guide our work. The organization also committed to the implementation of a new electronic health record, powered by Epic, which will enable us to provide better care and enhance the patient experience far into the future.

Our organization should be proud of what we have accomplished together this year. Guided by our purpose, driven by the dedication of our teams, and informed by a clear strategic direction, PIH Health is well-positioned to continue to evolve, advancing healthcare excellence while keeping patient care at the center of all we do.

Over the past year, PIH Health has continued to advance as an organization.
Following are some of the highlights from FY 2025.

FORWARD INNOVATION AND ACCESS

PIH Health Achieves Major Milestone with Barostim Therapy for Heart Failure Patients

In October 2024, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital became the first hospital on the west coast to treat its 50th heart failure patient with Barostim Baroflex Activation Therapy. Barostim is a state-of-the-art therapy that works by sending electrical pulses to stimulate baroreceptors in the carotid artery, rebalancing the nervous system and enhancing heart function. This minimally invasive treatment offers a safer, more accessible option for patients who may not qualify for other therapies, bringing new hope to those battling heart failure. PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital has been a leader in adopting this cutting-edge treatment, which delivers advanced, lifesaving care. Achieving this milestone highlights the expertise of the medical team and their dedication to pioneering heart care.

Pioneering the Future of Surgery with the da Vinci 5 Robotic System

On April 18, 2025, PIH Health performed its first procedure using the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system at our Whittier hospital, marking a major step in minimally invasive surgery. The da Vinci 5 supports a wide range of urologic, thoracic, colorectal, general, and gynecologic procedures. The system offers enhanced 3D visualization, greater instrument precision, and advanced surgical analytics, enabling physicians to perform complex procedures more efficiently and with improved patient outcomes.

The investment in the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system underscores PIH Health’s dedication to innovation and excellence in patient care, and we are proud to offer our patients access to the most advanced surgical technology available today.

Expanding Access to Care Through New and Reopened Facilities

In June 2025, PIH Health reopened the Outpatient Imaging Center in downtown Los Angeles, offering advanced diagnostic services such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and 3D mammography to support early detection and treatment. In September 2025, PIH Health opened the Addiction Medicine and Pain Management Clinic in Whittier—providing compassionate, evidence-based care for patients managing substance use disorders and chronic pain, and expanding access to comprehensive, high-quality care across the region.

Charting the Future:
Strategic Plan and Electronic Health Record (EHR) Transformation

In June 2025, PIH Health introduced its FY 2025–2029 strategic plan, a five-year roadmap guiding the organization’s growth, innovation, and commitment to improving community health. Grounded in our renewed Mission, Vision, and Values, the plan outlines eight key goals, including expanding patient access, enhancing quality and safety, strengthening financial performance, and elevating the patient experience.

In October 2025, PIH Health will begin its transition to the Epic EHR system, the industry leader in integrated healthcare technology. This multiyear initiative will unify clinical, operational, and patient data across all sites, improving care coordination, efficiency, and patient engagement. The project is set to go live in early 2027, representing a major investment in innovation and excellence.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE

PIH Health Staff Inspire Future Healthcare Professionals

PIH Health was proud to host Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. This special event gave employees the opportunity to share their workplace with their children while inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. Throughout the day, kids enjoyed engaging activities, including interactive hospital tours and a department showcase where they got an inside look at the incredible work happening at PIH Health. Children explored various healthcare roles, from patient care to behind-the-scenes hospital operations, sparking curiosity and excitement about the medical field. We look forward to continuing this tradition and inspiring young minds for years to come.

In June 2025, PIH Health welcomed student interns in many different departments across the organization including Care Management, Enterprise Supply Chain, Environmental Services, Inpatient/Outpatient Rehabilitation Services & Wound Healing Center, Marketing Communications, Medication Management, Post-Acute Services, Volunteer Services, Emergency Department, Utilization Management, Endocrinology, Family Medicine Residency, and Group Operations. This paid internship program provided college students exposure to various fields in the healthcare industry.

In February 2025, the PIH Health Downey Hospital Surgery Department staff participated in La Serna High School’s Career Fair, engaging with over 300 students. This event provided students within insights into various healthcare careers and the diverse roles within PIH Health. The staff shared information about surgical services, discussed the importance of patient care, and highlighted the impact of healthcare professionals in the community. This initiative reflects PIH Health’s commitment to inspiring and educating future healthcare professionals by connecting with local communities and fostering interest in the medical field.

PIH Health Supports Employee Growth and Advancement

In February 2025, PIH Health employees were given the opportunity to jumpstart their careers in healthcare by applying to one of our training programs for aspiring medical assistants (MAs) or certified coder 1 apprentices. Accepted candidates attended online tuition-free classes where they learned medical assistant skills then applied their knowledge in a paid internship upon completing the required coursework. Employees who complete the MedCerts Healthcare Certifications Training Program are extended a guaranteed full-time MA position at PIH Health Physicians clinics upon completion of the program and internship. This is an example of how PIH Health supports our employees looking to transition into MA roles while continuing to care for our patients in a new capacity.

In June 2025, the PIH Health Whittier Hospital New Graduate Registered Nurse Residency Program was awarded accreditation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP). This prestigious national designation recognizes excellence in supporting new nurses as they transition into practice. ANCC PTAP accreditation is considered the gold standard for nurse residency programs, affirming that our PIH Health Whittier Hospital Nurse Residency Program meets rigorous criteria for quality, support, and professional development. This achievement reflects the unwavering dedication and collaboration of our clinical educators, nursing leaders, program faculty, content experts, preceptors, mentors, and new graduate registered nurses. Their collective efforts have created a strong and supportive foundation that empowers new nurses to succeed and thrive throughout their careers.

In September 2025, PIH Health continued its partnership with Cerritos College’s Nursing Program to train a group of employees to become registered nurses. The PIH Health-Cerritos College Work Embedded Program provides a valuable opportunity for our dedicated employees to pursue their dreams of becoming nurses, while addressing our organization’s needs amidst nursing shortages. PIH Health is proud to offer educational opportunities like this to help our aspiring employees realize their dreams and continue to grow in their roles within our organization.

PIH Health Celebrates Years of Community Impact with Anniversary Milestones

On November 9, 2024, PIH Health Whittier Hospital celebrated 50 years of exceptional care in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Staff, families, and community members gathered to commemorate half a century of lifesaving work and dedication to the hospital’s tiniest patients. Since its founding in 1974, this level 3 NICU has provided vital care to over 350 newborns annually, offering a safe haven for infants born prematurely or with other complications. Equipped with 34 beds, including two isolation rooms, the NICU at PIH Health Whittier Hospital has been a beacon of hope for families navigating the challenges of newborn intensive care. Behind this incredible effort is a team of neonatologists, perinatologists, obstetricians, specialty physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and case managers—all working tirelessly to support these fragile lives. Their dedication and expertise have solidified PIH Health Whittier Hospital’s reputation as a leader in neonatal care, far exceeding conventional standards. This 50-year milestone is a testament to the resilience of countless families and the unwavering commitment of the hospital’s NICU team.

In September 2025, PIH Health Downey Hospital proudly marked its 105th anniversary, celebrating the organization’s continued growth and innovation, guided by its mission to provide exceptional care to the patients and communities it serves. What began in 1920 as Downey Hospital with just two doctors and six beds has grown into a trusted cornerstone of the community, caring for generations of residents for more than a century.

Today, PIH Health Downey Hospital stands as a thriving center of care with 199 licensed beds powered by 1,361 employees, 487 medical staff, and 324 volunteers—providing care for more than 62,700 emergency visits, and over 8,900 inpatient admissions and 111,700 outpatient visits each year.

UPLIFTING OUR COMMUNITY

PIH Health Cares for its People and Community Through Support Efforts

PIH Health remains committed to supporting the emotional and spiritual well-being of employees, patients, and the broader community. Our Spiritual Care Services Department provides chaplains who offer emotional support, guidance, and safe spaces for reflection and debriefing, helping individuals navigate anxiety and distress while upholding our mission to promote health and wellness.

In June 2025, PIH Health participated in the Sidewalk CPR Day 2025 press conference held at Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles. The event, led by Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services, brought together medical experts, first responders, and a cardiac arrest survivor to raise awareness of the importance of hands-only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). PIH Health Interventional Cardiologist Guy Mayeda MD was among the panel of medical experts that educated the public about timely intervention during cardiac emergencies.

These initiatives are just a few examples of how PIH Health continues to strengthen its role as a compassionate partner, actively uplifting the communities we serve and providing resources, support, and education to improve lives.

In March 2025, PIH Health employees, physicians, and volunteers supported wildfire relief efforts, collecting 213 duffle bags filled with essential items to support individuals and families affected by the Southern California wildfires. Community Benefit

Ready, Set, Health!

Community Benefit

At PIH Health, we are proud to be our community’s trusted healthcare partner at every stage of life. Our services span the full continuum of care—from childbirth and health education to chronic disease management, end-of-life care, and bereavement support—ensuring that care extends well beyond our hospital walls.

As a nonprofit organization, PIH Health demonstrates its commitment to delivering treatment and fostering health and healing to the local population through community benefit programs and activities. Through targeted programs, partnerships, and outreach, we help individuals and families access the care and resources they need to live healthy lives.

In FY 2025, PIH Health employees and volunteers continued to make a meaningful impact through acts of service and generosity. Together, they helped fulfill holiday wishes for more than 180 local families through an adopt-a-family gift distribution with The Whole Child, donated over 200 duffle bags filled with essentials for individuals affected by the California wildfires in partnership with L.A. CADA, Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills, and the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena, and provided more than 375 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students during a back-to-school drive hosted by Helpline Youth Counseling.

Our team dedicates time throughout the year to volunteer with local organizations addressing social determinants of health, including food insecurity, housing, and access to care. PIH Health also provides safety-net programs, such as charity care for those who meet eligibility criteria, and connects patients to vital services and resources upon discharge to ensure continued support beyond the hospital.

PIH Health continued to invest in health and wellness and support local organizations with a total community benefit investment of $193,649,656 in FY 2025. PIH Health’s Community Benefit Annual Report details the programs behind these investments—such as charity care, health professions student training, support groups, and research—that strengthen access to care for those who need it most.

Toward the end of the year, PIH Health released its 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) reports. Conducted every three years, the CHNAs feature data including maps, infographics, and community input on a variety of topics including chronic diseases, social determinants of health, and leading causes of death. Separate reports were published for the PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, and PIH Health Whittier Hospital service areas. The findings serve as a foundation for our community health improvement efforts and guide our strategic partnerships.

Grounded in these insights and strengthened by our partnerships, PIH Health remains ready to move forward into a healthier future for all.

Early in 2025, PIH Health Foundation launched its Corporate Partners Program, an initiative engaging distinguished companies in advancing high-quality, compassionate care in our community. As part of the program, partners enjoyed exclusive opportunities to connect with PIH Health leadership, including a private dinner with President and Chief Executive Officer James West, and a social mixer with System Vice President of Enterprise Supply Chain Chico Manning. These gatherings fostered meaningful dialogue, strengthened relationships, and reaffirmed our shared commitment to PIH Health’s mission.

In May 2025, PIH Health Foundation hosted its inspiring black-tie gala, This Is The Time, bringing together community members with a shared purpose—to support patients and families facing cancer. Held at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa, the evening welcomed community leaders, physicians, grateful patients, and philanthropic partners for a heartfelt celebration of hope and healing. Through the generosity of donors, sponsors, and attendees, more than $800,000 in net proceeds were raised to benefit cancer care services at PIH Health. These critical funds will expand access to advanced treatments and compassionate support services that directly benefit those in our care.

In August 2025, PIH Health Foundation’s Your Impact, Their Innovation: A Cancer Care Conversation brought together more than 80 guests for an inspiring Circle of Excellence gathering. Led by Yong Park MD, five cancer experts shared insights on the evolving landscape of cancer care—advancements in treatment, patient-centered approaches, and the vital role of community support.

Thanks to the meaningful and purpose-driven contributions of all our donors, PIH Health continues to deliver exceptional care and expand access to lifesaving services. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contribute to our mission—your support ensures that PIH Health remains a strong, compassionate partner in the health of our communities.
